The locomotives was built by Vulcan Iron Works, Wilkes Barre, PA in 1930. Flagg Coal Company 0-4-0ST No. 75 waits in the Rockton yard of the South Carolina Railroad Museum prior to leaving with the 09:30 departure. The locomotive entered service in December 1930 as #2 for the Flagg Coal Company located in Avoca, PA and was used as a switching engine. In 1935 the locomotive was sold to Solvay Process Co. in Jamesville, New York and its number changed to 75. Flagg Coal Company No. 75 0-4-0ST moves down the Rockton yard of the South Carolina Railroad Museum in preparation for the 09:30am departure. In 1953 #75 was retired from service and sold to Rail City Museum, Sandy Pond, New York. A restoration lasting a full 10 years was undertaken by owners Byron and John Gramling in 1991. However, with Past Time Rail going into administration that did not happen. To get a steam "fix" the East Lancs Railway was visited instead. Unfortunately, the ELR seems to be struggling for steam locomotives this year. "Jinty" no. 47324 appears to be the only steam locomotive available to work on the line. On a hazy Saturday afternoon ex-LNER class A4 4-6-2 no. 60009 About twenty minutes later no. 9 is seen approaching the Broad Street bridge in Cowdenbeath. The locomotive and support coach have only a short distance to cover before arriving home at Thornton Junction.

Most of the shots in this collection were taken at the yard in Belton, SC that is the interchange point with the Greenville & Western. The others were shot at the company's "bone yard" at Docheno, SC. Thursday 14 May 2009: Another Class III railroad serving upstate South Carolina is the Pickens Railroad. Easily identified by the locomotive's luminous orange paint scheme, the Pickens Railroad operates two lines - a very lightly traveled line from Easley, SC to Pickens, SC and the much more heavily used Anderson, SC to Honea Path, SC line. Passing through Belton, SC with a short mixed freight is Pickens Railroad GE U18B no. 9508. The destination is the yard at Belton. Pickens Railroad GE U18B (a class affectionately known as Pickens Railroad GE U18B no. 9508 enters the yard at Belton, SC with a single car that will be transfered to the Greenville & Western Railroad. After completing the switching moves at Belton yard, no. 9508 heads off towards Honea Path with three cars for a local fertilizer manufacturing facility. The Pickens Railroad has a small yard (probably more accurately described as a Pickens Railroad GE U18B no. 9503 pauses in the yard at Gluck, SC. The loco will soon be switched on to the line that runs to the Michelin plant located in Anderson, SC. ]]> Mon May 4 2009 Two Blue A4's At Stratford-upon-Avon http://railwayphotographybyandycarr.fotopic.net/c1674196.html Of course it was damp, gray, overcast and generally miserable (it was Startford on a Sunday) but that didn't stop people turning out in force to witness the site of two garter blue A4's posed alongside each other. No. 4498 "Sir Nigel Gresley" and No. 4468 "Mallard" were the locomotives in charge of the two Shakespeare Limited trains that ran on this particular Sunday. The original slides were of poor quality due to the very poor light conditions. Unfortunately there's a limit to how much such images can be resurrected in PhotoShop! The closest, most regular main line steam was to be found at nearby Stratford-upn-Avon. On Sunday afternoons the "Shakespeare Limited", a dining train originating from Marylebone Station, would arrive. I made numerous visits to this location but never did see the sun shine! The weather was always overwhelmingly dreary and rain was not uncommon. Unsurpringly the majority of the photos are a little on the dark side. The slide scans in this collection were taken one Sunday in August 1986 when rebuilt "Merchant Navy" class 4-6-2 no. 35028 "Clan Line" was in charge. A Class 40 brings its train past the large signal box at Inverkeithing Central Junction. If I remember correctly this photo, developed in August 1973, was shot while waiting for no. 60009 Another view of the closed up signal box that guarded Charleston Junction. The line to Longannet diverged from the line to Edinburgh at this point and survives to this day. The boarded up windows confirm that the Charleston Junction box, just outside Dunfermline Lower station, is out of commission and doesn't have long to live. With the Dunfermline skyline as a backdrop the Charleston Junction box looks a little forlorn as it awaits demolition. Pictured are the up line signals at Inverkeithing East Junction. Andrew Barclay 0-6-0ST One of the less glamorous locomotives to be found on the NYMR is Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Collieries No. 5. Pictured at Grosmont station this 0-6-2T was built in 1909 by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn and has seen service on the line since 1970. Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2 no. 34072 Detail showing the name plate and crest carried by no. 34072. Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2 no. 34072 No. 34072 heads into Grosmont tunnel. The Bulleid-designed locomotive is running with a high-sided tender - always a pleasing combination. Pictured reversing its train into Grosmont station no. 34072 was completed at Brighton works in April 1948 and was withdrawn from service in October 1964. The route indicator dics are positioned as no. 34072 prepares to leave Grosmont with a service to Pickering. The locomotive was sent to Woodham's scrpayard in Barry in March 1965 leaving for restoration in November 1984. No. 34072 upon arrival at Pickering station. Black 5 4-6-0 no. 44767 was completed on December 31, 1947. It did not carry the name No. 44767 was unqiue among the 842-strong class of Black 5's as it was the only one built with outside Stephenson link motion. No. 34072 awaits to depart Grosmont - this time with a rake of Mk I coaches in Small locomotive, big exhaust! The sign at the entrance to the car park at Heywood Station says it all! ex-LMS ex-LMS After switching lines no. 47324 heads back to Heywood station and its awaiting four coach train. A couple of minutes after the scheduled departure time no 47324 eases the 10:20 to Bury Bolton Street out of Heywood Station and under the Manchester Road bridge. The 10:20 passes under the Schofield Street bridge on its way to Bury Bolton Street. The impressive signal gantry located at the south end of Bury Bolton Street station. Close up of the British Railways crest on Class 40 no. D345. Less than pristine British Railways crest on Class 08 shunter D3232. When was the last time this loco was painted? Apparently the locomotives are not the only source of smoke at the East Lancs Railway. BR Class 8P no 71000 Duke of Gloucester waits to depart Rawtenstall with the 14:00 service to Bury Bolton Street.
